Day 98

The snow is coming. Hurry to your local INDEPENDENT bookstore to pick up something juicy and fun to read this weekend. That’s what I did today…walked directly to Watchung Booksellers in Montclair to thank Margot Sage-EL and her staff for helping to make  The Miracles of Prato — co-authored by me — their #1 bestselling hardcover fiction title of 2009.

Yup, that’s #1 — ahead of Dan Brown, The Help, and Barbara Kingsolver. Not that I’m bragging or anything. Just doing a little unbiased reporting. My friend Pam’s humor book, How Not to Act Old, is Watchung’s #1 paperback nonfiction book of the year, and local t.v. reporter Byron Pitts’ memoir, Step Out on Nothing, is #1 on the nonfiction hardcover list. Byron’s is one of two books that make me cry in recent memory. It’s an amazing story of courage and triumph over adversity.

While we’re on the subject of books, congratulations to both Louise deSalvo and Christina Baker Kline, whose writing blogs are absolutely essential reading for today’s working writers. You don’t even have to put on your snowboots to check them out. But you do have to walk to your local bookstore if you want to buy one of their books and support independent booksellers!
